MOTORHEAD
Inferno
(Sanctuary)
Few bands survive twenty-plus years, let alone maintain creativity every bit as awesome as when they first hit the scene. One of those bands is Slayer. Another is Motorhead.
Inferno is the latest release from Lemmy, Campbell and Dee, and it is a bloody ripper. I'm only 26 and Motorhead have been going longer than I have been alive so I referred the album to a couple of seasoned Motorhead fans for their opinion. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Almost all agreed that it was their best album in years.
Lemmy is now in his 60’s but his vocals on this album are so solid you can hardly believe his age. He can still belt out a track and sound more intense than any punk or metal vocalist on the scene today. Lemmy’s lyrics are still as clever and cool as ever, making numerous references previous songs and some of the best rhyming in metal today.
The album opens with a killer of a track called ‘Terminal Show’, really pointing out why Motorhead were credited with creating the speed metal genre. This track could have easily fitted on Overkill or Ace of Spades.
Guitar legend Steve Vai appears on a couple of tracks adding that extra touch to cap off two great songs in ‘Terminal Show’ and ‘Down on Me’.
Motorhead’s blues influence is easily noticeable on this album when listening to songs like ‘Keys to the Kingdom’ and ‘Suicide’. The whole blues thing is capped off in style with a traditional blues track at the end of the album called ‘Whorehouse Blues’. Lemmy sings in a more natural voice and it even includes an acoustic guitar and a harmonica.
Almost every track from the album is brilliant but if I had to pick a couple of the best for someone to go check out then: ‘Terminal Show’, ‘In the Year of the Wolf’, ‘Down on Me’ and ‘In the Name of Tragedy’.
As always this Motorhead album will appeal to the punkers, metallers and more. I have nothing negative to say about this album at all. It’s going to be hard to knock this off as one of the best albums of the year.
Side note to Metallica: Have a good listen to this album. This is how it’s done.
