CATDESIGNERS Strange Little Creature (Googlie Mooglie) “Move along… nothing to see here.”<br> Such was my initial impression of CatDesigners second recorded effort Strange Little Creature. Being unfamiliar with the band’s first album Chemical Jazz – I am not able to discern whether this new release is a progression or otherwise, though’ the bio does state that it is ‘spikier’ than their first. Either way, there is little to write home about. Psychedelic in a sixties kinda way, CatDesigners’ fail to take the listener on any trip or journey other than bland, Doors-influenced pop-songs backed by synthetic-sounding beats. The hooks are non-existent, the dramatics as exciting as two hour special of Burke’s Backyard and it’s all wrapped in an uninspiring performance – suggesting the songs lost their momentum before reaching the final studio process. If you’re looking for reference points, the band suggest some David Bowie (agreed), Beck (which era?), Brel (who?), Blur (don’t think so!) and Jeff Buckley (you gotta be joking!). In any case, Strange Little Creature is far from impressive, and will undoubtedly join my growing pile of unwanted discs. By Warren Wheeler www.catdesigners.co.ukwww.googliemooglie.co.uk
