MERE THEORY Disengage EP (Building) South Australian four-piece Mere Theory first came to my attention with their track ‘Stranger’ on the Building Records compilation 60 Songs, and again with the same track on Helltrack’s Action Against Cruelty compilation. It was a simple but effective tune that raised its head high above the hard- and metalcore acts that dominated both double-disc collections. The interest that one track generated has now been solidified with the release of their second EP Disengage. Part of the nu-breed of punk rock that is currently doing the rounds, Mere Theory stand-out with their strong nods to Foo Fighters, Pacifier, and Coheed & Cambria. Strong rock tunes are complimented by mature and careful restraint, not allowing enthusiasm to overstep emotion. Strong three-part harmonies accentuate the maturity levels as the band rocks with progression and unpredictable structures in each of the six tracks on offer. Like the beginning of a healthy lifelong relationship, Disengage tentatively introduces itself, choosing not to be overbearing or outdo it’s welcome within the first meeting. It’s a subtle attachment that grows more intimate and more intense with each subsequent listen. With two solid releases now under their belt, and a string of international supports, the time may be ripe for Mere Theory to step it up a notch and invest in an albums worth of material.
