DEXTER JONES CIRCUS ORCHESTRA Dexter Jones Circus Orchestra (Freebird Records) There are some interesting new styles of music coming out of Sweden of late. The stoner scene has been big there for a while now but bands like Dexter Jones Circus Orchestra and Zen are really pushing a new style which I can only explain as a mix of blues-stoner-grunge. To give you some idea of what it sounds like, think Mark Lanegan's new solo album but more up-tempo and with touches of grunge and stoner throughout. DJCO are really catchy and pretty good to chill to. At times they remind me of the Screaming Trees other times a darker bluesy version of Red Hot Chili Peppers. DJCO consists of three guitars, bass and drums giving them a full sound and pretty solid groove complimenting each other nicely. Acoustic guitars are used throughout to great effect. The darker sound of an acoustic guitar really enhances the music where an electric would detract. The vocals suit the music well and aren’t overbearing for the more subtle style of music that DJCO play. There are only a couple of songs on the album that don't quite grab me. They’re the quieter ones that I find myself tuning out to. They’re not bad songs but just not as engaging as the rest of the album. On early listens some songs do tend to sound a little similar. This does little to detract from the album however and you soon get passed it (Much like first-ever listens to Kyuss’s Blues for the Red Sun). Dexter Jones Circus Orchestra are one of those gems that will go unearthed by most people but will be a prized possession for others. By Nathan Peauril www.circusorchestra.comcome.to/freebird
