SILVER White Diary (Bad Afro Records)
From Oslo, Norway, Silver clashes the rancid with the raucous on their debut album. Blanco delivers the irreverent lyrics of his snotty punk vocals, while his bandmates’ rousing energy recalls the British punk practitioners of the late-70’s throughout two minute, three chord numbers like ‘Evacuate! (Sin Fix Journal)’ and ‘Funeral Class One’. Just listen to Blanco’s fervent vocals on ‘Condem Nation’ for an amplified impersonation of the snarling vocals of the Sex Pistols’ Johnny Rotten. The exuberant energy of the preceding tunes is replaced with more varied and softer instrumental palette on ‘The Dark Side Of The Light’, which features new textures like a twangy, neo-psychedelic guitar and a trace of piano and acoustic guitar. The cascading backing vocals of ‘Dark Dark Diary’ and ‘Angels Calling’ adds some spice to Silver’s enthusiastic glam punk, while the jangling pop guitars of ‘Intimate Cussing’ are proof positive that Silver recognise the value of an incessant hook. The revved up ‘Gentlemen’s Blues (Riot 1-2-3)’ stands out as the best elements of glam and punk rock crash together head-on.
