DOZER, GIANTS OF SCIENCE, MOTORMOTH QUT Guild Bar, Brisbane: June 12, 2004
Splitting the difference between muscular hard rock and post-90’s grunge, Motormoth’s tunes bit hard at the ears of the punters as they explore the limits of their indulgent tendencies. Firmly positioned centre stage over the top of his microphone stand with his Gibson SG six-string riding low, Skitz belts out heavily delayed vocal melodies. This Gold Coast four-piece has a passion for insanely hooky melodies and crank out enough bottom end groove to inspire some healthy hip shaking and beer drinking amongst the early crowd.
It is clearly evident tonight that Giants Of Science have been honing their craft in the time they have recently spent away from the live scene. Giants Of Science’s drill press rock riffs rub up against their superbly crafted pop hooks and often within the space of a single song. A thoughtfully re-arranged version of the tightly packed ‘Hobbes’ sees the four piece operating at full intensity. ‘Bora Horza’ is filled with loud jagged guitars playing broken riffs, yet this experienced Brisbane outfit have enough melodic sense to tie it all together into a memorable tune. Vocalist/guitarist Ben Salter announces their last song as a cover-version of Budd’s low-down fuzz rock tune ‘Yeti’, which they attack with confidence.
Dozer leaves behind the inter-song banter tonight, with vocalist/guitarist Fredrik Nordin taking only a brief moment to introduce the band. Tunes like the super fuzzy ‘Headed For The Sun’ pummel forward relentlessly with earth shaking intensity. Guitarist Tommi Holappa throws his huge frame around the stage with reckless abandon, until drops of sweat fly from his fingers with each down-stroke through the six strings of his Gibson Firebird.
Tommi again channels that same unfailing energy into streaming waves of feedback-laden psychedelia mid-set. Fredrick exits the stage and allows his bandmates the opportunity to cut loose with some solid blues based jamming, which sees a series of call and response sequences between Tommi and bassist Johan Rockner. Disconnecting from the magnetism of his bandmates’ talents, drummer Daniel Lidèn grabs the opportunity to belt out a frenzied solo. With Tommi now down on the floor manipulating his pedals and literally attacking his guitar with sawing and stabbing motions, Fredrick returns to the stage and redirects his bandmates’ impulsive and unrestrained momentum into a structured tune. As Dozer returns to the stage to perform the intensely energised ‘Rising’ as their only encore, every punter vocalises their appreciation for these Swedish hard rockers.

i found the drummer (Daniel) to be entertaining.... all night he was this timid little goth dweeb, until he got on stage and just snapped like a caged animal!
i also dug the lengthy jams... awesome! did anyone else pick up on the Beatles reference durign one of their noise forays?

I think I missed the Beatles reference, but Wingnut from the Brisbane rock band Double Chamber picked it up and I'm sure the guys from the Giants Of Science would have as well.

the beatles were a britpop band from a few years back who sounded a lot like Oasis....
actually... a few years ago when Bardot were in the charts (you know... that Popstars band...) they were on The Panel and they were saying how they contributed to the songwriting of their album... and Rob Sitch (i think) jokingly said something about them being the next Lennon & McCartney... and one of them replied "who are they?"
