SELFLESS Until Now (demo)
Sometimes the quietest bands make the loudest noise. Take Perth’s Selfless for example. Altruistic by name and generous by nature, Selfless play a solid form of the much lauded emo style on this, their 3-track debut effort.
Opener and title track ‘Until Now’ recalls a strong Unwritten Law influence with its pop sensibilities deeply entrenched within a skater-rock structure. Big on the chorus and big on the bouncy riff, Selfless would undoubtedly fit perfectly within a CD collection consisting of MXPX, 28 Days, or Bodyjar.
‘My Mind Is…’ is an equally strong effort with its driving rhythms and energetic melodies leaving one brimming with a positive sing-along. The final track, ‘A Few Good Lies’ is a muck-around tune dissing the local folk who accuse the band of the all-too-frequent tall-poppy syndrome.
As good as this three-tracker is the band is limited due to budget constraints. The production, whilst solid, is not enough to get the band mainstream airplay alongside Blink 182, though the songs would undoubtedly fit into the mainstream arena. If the band can hold it together long enough to go through the poop-chute that major labels put bands through, Selfless could certainly be a winner in the not-too-distant future.
