ZEKE’S WHEEL Zeke’s Wheel (Independent) Either rock music has taken a large step backwards or I’ve completely missed something. I recall a time when rock was dangerous, confrontational and damn well offensive. But for the most part my mailbox is becoming clogged with basic, boring, safe as houses, tripe. Jet have done their thing, and it’s not an altogether bad disc, but ultimately the push forward just doesn’t exist. Brisbane’s Zeke’s Wheel is perhaps Jet’s younger cousin. Decent mixing levels support this strong Australian-accented release drawing from obvious influences such as AC/DC and The Angels, as well as some of the more forgettable acts like Choirboys, Noiseworks and Johhny Diesel and the Injectors. Beneath it all there’s even a hint of Tamworth twang, but country these guys are not. Consisting of two main songwriters Richie Scholl and Brad Acutt the duo recruit a bassist and a couple of drummers who, while fine at their job, are obviously unable to contribute a hell of a lot. ‘Love Comes Easy’ is a surefire local radio hit, with it’s dated punching chorus and slide leads, which while John Butler did not invent he has mastered the art and made it all popular again. As the album continues you can hear some Lynyrd Skynyrd, Black Crowes and even some rocky Bryan Adams, but ultimately these guys are about as exciting as watching a covers band set up their gear.
