HelloGoodbye
HelloGoodbye EP
(Drive-Thru)
The second in a Drive-Thru series of free downloadable EP’s is the quirky 5-tracker from HelloGoodbye. Though typical in it’s Drive-Thru trademarked sweet-punk elements HelloGoodbye demonstrate an originality rarely seen in the genre. Not that the band is breakthrough material, but anyone able to stir the stale pop-punk pot a bit deserves credit.
Opening with ‘Shimmy Shimmy Quarter Turn (Take It Back To Square One)’ the band utilise eighties electronics along with bouncy riffs, a little like recent Offspring experiments, but with greater effect. The vocals here reek of label mates Something Corporate, but the versatility of the band ensures the comparison does not stick.
The second track, for example, delves into the more melodic elements of Coheed & Cambria, before ‘Bonnie Taylor Shakedown… 2k1’ goes all sweet again, using the traditional English verse in a way sure to get your parents pissed. Ahhh… the smell of rebellious youth…<br>
‘Jesse Buy Nothing… Go To Prom Anyways’ sees the band apply their humour, with static and screamed vocals, atop a dancey industrial structure, sounding somewhere between Dandy Warhols, Faith No More and Rammstein. Though in no way indicative of the rest of the EP, this track demonstrates HelloGoodbye do not take themselves too seriously and are keen to fool around.
The EP peters off with another electronically backed track, but this time sticking to the Something Corporate/Dashboard Confessional structure of sweetness and sincerity, even to the point of lyrically following a love letter.
HelloGoodbye won’t change the world yet, but if they can build upon the quirk and wit of their self-titler, then the younger siblings of Linkin Park and Blink 182 followers may be in for a treat.
