ARRHYTHMIA Shores of Orion (Red Records) CD002
Not to be confused with the mind-jolting mathcore of Dysrhythmia, Arrhythmia is an electronic project following in the traditions of Deep Forest and Enigma, though perhaps not as deeply worldbeat as Deep Forest, and not as saintly as Enigma. Arrhythmia, rather, fall somewhere in the middle utilising sweeping synth moments similar to Moby’s Play or the backing on VAST’s Music for People.
Looped beats, vocal samples from sources western and eastern, and industrial clangs aplenty also give rise to faint Soma or Spooky comparisons.
‘Clearly Nothing New’ combines sampled sitar with a purging dub beat ala Scorn, creating a kind of surreal, slowed-down Bollywood feel, while ‘We Can Fly’ introduces female vocals care of one Ursula Burns. This gives the track a sultry effect pleasing the ears of Delerium fans.
As you could probably tell by the list of references Arrhythmia all over the shop as far as genres are concerned. But where this can sometimes lead to a downfall, the exploration of various electronic elements keeps Shores of Orion from falling into the tired and mundane. Indeed, anyone into electronic music from Art of Noise to Single Gun Theory has reason to explore Arrhythmia.
