PAUL MCMORDIE Uncharted Territories (Red Records) RED001
Paul McMordie’s debut disc is a quaint little number sure to unsettle most rock-hardened ears. It’s delicate in approach and delivery and serves as the perfect accompaniment to a quiet night in with a book or a doze… or both.
Sixteen tracks in all, Uncharted Territories is an all-acoustic, word-less album that recalls hints of John Coltrane and Van Morrison as well as Jesse Sprinkle’s (he of Poor Old Lu, The World Inside, Demon Hunter, etc…) Sunsites project. Calm, tranquil, peaceful, unhindered.
But it’s the lack of pretense that I find most appealing. Like Sprinkle, McMordie’s humility is evident in the restraint shown, meandering around the fret-board without being overly concerned as to how ‘right’ or technical it is.
The packaging compliments the music perfectly with its earthy colours and softness in materials. Even the minimal liner notes point to McMordie’s unassuming nature.
