VARIOUS ARTISTS
Action Against Cruelty
(Helltrack) HELL01
Action Against Cruelty is the perfect example of an individual being passionate enough about a cause to actually get off their arse and act. A double disc set, this release is in aid of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA), a non-profit organization that works for animal rights, and in particular bear welfare issues.
And who better to scream about such injustice than 38 punk, hardcore and metal acts from Australia and beyond. All ethics and good causes aside, Action Against Cruelty is a damn fine release with showing astonishing diversity within the aforementioned realms.
Being an Australian project, there’s plenty of local talent on display from newcomers I Killed The Prom Queen, Daysend, and ShotPointBlank, while stalwarts such as Frankenbok and Alchemist also weigh in their concerns for furry friends.
Internationally speaking, you can’t get much better than Time In Malta, Glasseater or the new flavour of the month Poison The Well. Even old-schoolers Prong get in on the game with a track from their ‘comeback’ disc, Scorpio Rising.
But for my mind the standout tracks belong to Mere Theory and The Critics, both on disc 1. Mere Theory’s ‘Stranger’ is taken from their Towering Sun EP, and traverses the mathrock path toward a more complex punk outcome. Think The Knives of Neptune meet Diplomat. The Critics meanwhile play straight-up, old school punk-pop in the vein of The Clash or the obscure but frightfully good The Corbans.
All in all, Action Against Cruelty scans the scope of harder-edged music ensuring something for everyone. But most importantly, it’s about the bears.
