And now for something completely different. At least for these pages anyhow.
Keven Brennan is an accomplished jazz musician, with this his third release. But accomplished or not, unfortunately the broad spectrum of jazz styles covered here makes Revival Tent a disparate collection of songs.
There are great soothing tracks like ‘Rebirth of the Unknown (God is so Good)’ and the jiving opener ‘Just Jiggle’, but the album is equally let down by nonsense tunes such as ‘Pirate, Har!’ and ‘When I Go Crazy’.
For those who dig on Frank Zappa and Sly and the Family Stone you may find more worth here than I, whose only jazz interest lies in freeformers such as Sun Ra and John Zorn.
