THE GATHERING
Monsters EP
(Psychonaut)
The second single lifted from their brilliant Souvenirs disc is reworked here in five different formats to ensure that ever-catching chorus is embedded deeply into your subconscious.
Starting with the ‘Radio Edit Mix’ the chorus actually starts proceedings off, which seems to unsettle the natural flow of the original. Indeed if this the version peddled to radio first time listeners would be rather befuddled by the structure.
The ‘Gallion Mix’ introduces an Eastern melody to the framework complete with an earthy world-beat backdrop. Again the chorus is launchpad, but in full remix mode it works much better. Anneke van Geirsbergen’s vocals are then treated to a megaphone effect with the verses chopped up and spread across the three and a half minute journey.
‘Gauzy Mix’ is perhaps the best version on offer as it brings a deep, resonant bass dub system to the mix. The dub is complimented by a rocking beat and perhaps would be the better version to be pushed to radio as it recalls moments of Skunk Anansie or Bjork’s ‘Army of Me’. The refrain is repeated to the nth degree before breaking it all down again for the chorus.
The ‘Go Deep! Dance Mix’ simply detracts from the original song structure brilliance while the ‘Promo Demo Mix’ is purely for interest’s sake.
It’s a shame the original is not included here, as that is by far the superior version thus far realized. I might even venture to suggest that a better tracklisting would have been the original, 2 remixes (Gallion and Gauzy) and then maybe some unreleased live or left-over studio tracks.
