Thunderhawk: Demo 1
“Play at extreme volume” is the advice Toronto-based newcomers Thunderhawk
give to prospective listeners on the liner notes of their demo. Well, I followed their advice and just about blew my speakers! The bottom end on this three-song demo is truly wall-shaking.
'Spread' is the first track. A gargantuan mid-tempo opening soon gives way
to the rollicking riffs of the verses. Mid-way through the instruments fade out leaving only the vocals to carry the chorus, washing in and out. It's ear-catchingly trippy. Next up is a slower, melodic, stop-start affair in the mould of The Sky Is Fallin', while the last track, 'Blown Away', gets back to the band's obvious strength - and the speakers are in for another pounding. Great stuff.
Chances are you already own some albums that sound a lot like this. Having said that, chances are they are also some of the favourites in your collection. Welcome to Sky Valley, your QOTSA stuff. Given the reported recent parting of ways of Josh Homme and Nick Oliveri, I'm willing to let them off the hook this time.
They've managed to recreate the "lava from the speakers" sound (I wish I'd come up with that phrase) and walking bass foundations that we all know and love, and actually written some songs that do that sound justice.
Fact is, this band appears capable of taking their influences and lifting things to the next level. At that point, they will truly be a force to be reckoned with. For now, just get your hands on the demo or download the tunes from their website, and enjoy.
