from thesoundmonitor (on-line soon)
Opening with an incomprehensible sample (perhaps due to copyright fears) Traces of Nut’s introductory offering takes strong cues from The Mark of Cain and Fugazi with their jagged rhythms and spiteful vocal approach.
That said, Traces are far from narrow in their quasi-mathrock delivery, often utilising a softer, albeit skewwiff vocal line in a number of the six tracks available.
Perhaps contradictory to The Mark of Cain influence the Wollongong four-piece take pot shots at soldier-types in ‘Special Patrol Group’, labeling combatants as “international thugs… exploiting blood… in the name of democracy”. And with the reference to oil in the opening stanza, it’s quite reasonable to suggest that recent events have influenced such charges.
Traces mathematical structures and willingness to try irregular approaches (see: ‘Attention To Detail’) suggest an act with brighter things to come once experience has been added to their repertoire.
