FU MANCHU Something Beyond EP
Two new songs and a Black Flag cover comprise Fu Manchu's first studio release since California Crossing, and first studio release with Scott Reeder on drums (no similarity to ex-Kyuss bassist of the same name). Both new songs seem to be a touch heavier and a touch more rock than the previous two albums. They strike a mix between The Action Is Go and King of the Road/California Crossing. The first things I noticed was the heavier toned guitar, the slightly gruffer vocals and Reeder’s drumming. I didn't think it would be possible to replace the iconic Brant Bjork on drums but I admit I enjoy some of the stuff Reeder does. ‘So Far Behind’ definitely fits the typical mould of most Fu Manchu songs. It's quite catchy and will get stuck in your head for a while. ‘Something Beyond’ sounds a bit different, possibly a bit like some of the slower, groovier tracks from The Action Is Go. Fu then add their own unique style to 'Six Pack' originally recorded by Black Flag. The version has grown on me a little but I'm still not sure such a song as this should be played so slowly. I prefer the original or the Rollins Rise Above effort. Overall the EP holds some promise for the new album due sometime this year.
