STRENGTH WITHIN We Deliver (Common Bond) CBR05
Though not an aficionado by any stretch of the imagination, I’m not completely averse to hardcore in its entirety. But as with any scene I think it can become flooded with clones, which makes it an arduous task to seek out the quality.
Unfortunately for Penrith’s Strength Within they seem to have taken on their influences a little bit too strongly and as such have come up with a competent though unoriginal EP.
Frenetic, raw, and uncompromising in all its old-school hardcore glory, We Deliver is 12 minutes of gang-choruses reminiscent of Madball, speed akin to Hatebreed and self-righteous aggression like early Crucified.
Riffs are loosely based around the familiar punked three-chords though there is some nice dischords thrown in, showing promise. The rhythm section is kept simple which is perhaps necessary for such a style, and the lyrics reek of the usual piety that the HC scene is renowned for; scene loyalty, distaste of apathy, and disillusionment with the establishment. All good topics, but a little more introspection would be nice.
There a few shining moments suggesting the band is capable of more, but whether they reach that pinnacle is yet to be seen.
