X Evil Rumours (Laughing Outlaw)
Australian punk-rock throughout the seventies and eighties especially seems littered with criminally under-rated bands and near the top of that list are Sydney's X. Thankfully now they are being exposed to a new generation of fan's who are lapping up the punk-rock sounds of old via their EP release of 2003 I Love Rock n’ Roll and this brand new double live set Evil Rumours.
Recorded live at Sydney's Basement in December 2002, the twenty-two tracks delivered capture the band in an intimate style. Described on the cover poster as unplugged, they still deliver their set in a raw and powerful fashion with interesting additions of brass and strings in places. While I've never really been a fan of live releases X did enough at this show to warrant a release and make it a good release at that.
Having seen the band previously but not being hugely familiar with the bands’ recorded work the disc is certainly an interesting listen and obviously a more than worthy addition to the record collections of X fans. For people unfamiliar with the band and ready to give them a try, I'd recommend checking out their earlier EP before diving into this release. Both releases are on Sydney's own Laughing Outlaw label who must be applauded for going out on a limb and releasing records that most other labels would think of as way to adventurous.
