RAWJAW Retrospective (Nasoni Records) 015
Directly from Munich to you, Rawjaw has a line on a heavy psychedelic mindset that'll keep you flying during your next controlled substance drought. These cosmic stoners, coming at ya with strong female vocals up front, will alter your mood with buzzsaw guitars and distorted vox juxtaposed against a strong feeling for melody and beauty. Add in a typically beautiful Nasoni label gatefold cover to this vinyl release (ltd. to 500 copies) and you've got the whole heavy psych package.
From what little information is out there, this actually is a retrospective of older tunes combined with some newer stuff. 'Afraid of Psi,' from 2000's Hooch starts things off with some excellent loping bass and heavy guitar that has some definite early Homme moments. On the strength of this cut it'll be worth tracking Hooch down. 'Drugged' is more laid back, with those beautiful feminine vocals sounding like they're resonating against a comb and wax paper. 'Unstable/Dumb' slows things down with some tasty percussion played against some groovy guitar, while 'Jungle of Green' is a mystic churner, gradually building into a Hawkwind-style burn fest.
Any one of you heads that’s into the above-referenced space merchants, or perhaps Kyuss, Magic Dirt, SubArachnoid Space, or label mates Colour Haze will get that "third eye landslide" feeling from Rawjaw, yet another quality entry into the music world from Nasoni. Get cosmic!
