VARIOUS ARTISTS
Contaminated VI
(Relapse) EVR81
Over the years Relapse have offered the world some of the finest heavy music around, and every so often they showcase their wares on 2CD sets known as the Contaminated series.
These releases are invaluable as they offer an inexpensive way to discover new and upcoming releases as well as a few oldies thrown in for good measure. And every so often the chaps at Relapse include a few demos, edits or live tracks in the mix to keep it somewhat useful to the avid label fan.
At 39 tracks long outing number 6 is a demonstration of the wide and varied label that Relapse has become. Opening with the awe-inspiring grind/metalcore Burnt By the Sun, CD1 also includes modern classics by ultra-heavy groovers Mastodon, seriously weighty High On Fire, the instro-mathcore of Dysrhythmia, and seriously spazzed The Dillinger Escape Plan while delving into a past, raw Unsane classic and a previously unreleased edited track from my personal favourite Neurosis. Disc 1 also features the disturbing sounds of Today Is the Day, Australia’s own sci-fliers Alchemist and the remarkably beautiful, and thus somewhat out of place 27.
Disc 2 meanwhile houses a more varied section with screamo-grinders Pig Destroyer opening proceedings, with newly-signed punk legends Zeke, and fuzzed out Bongzilla soon following. There’s the classic re-issue of Cryptic Slaughter, the insane Agoraphobic Nosebleed, the gothic overtones of Mandible Chatter, the seriously rockin’ Alabama Thunderpussy and the freeform jazz inspired Harvey Milk all wedged in the middle before finishing things off with a spacious VidaObmana track and the skull-crushing industrial backbone of Melbournians Halo.
Heavy music for the open minded and a few brainless twits thrown in for fun…. How could you go wrong?
