DAUGHTERS Canada Songs (Building Recods) BR015 This is an album the band want you to hate. It has fourteen songs but it only goes for fifteen minutes Each of these quirkily named musical snippets (eg. ‘Damn those blood suckers and their good qualities’, or ‘A room full of hard-ons and nowhere to sit down’) is disturbingly brutal and impossibly fast. The vocals are little more than shrieks and screams, the guitars are discordant at best and the drummer plays at a ridiculously fast pace. So what does it all mean? The press release has a mini-essay espousing the ‘Dionysian spirit’ embodied in the frenzied sounds. I think that’s bullshit. These blokes just want to make the most extreme music around, and they’ve gone pretty damn close with this. If they can actually play the songs off this album live it would represent a wonderful achievement in technical musicianship. Whether it would be an achievement in musical artistry, however, is quite debatable. Is it art? Well, I suppose it is. Will you like it? No. Not unless you are sick, perverted or otherwise mentally unbalanced. And even then you probably won’t.
