AHKMED
Ahkmed
(Kozmik Artifactz)
Melbourne, Australia's Ahkmed don't give a whiz about current trends in the stoner/doom world, 'cause they've been busy hoeing their own row for years. Clone-this and southern-fried-that may come and go, but Ahkmed know where it's at, man, and it's a groovy place that'll welcome you with open arms. Your passport is that illegal smile already forming on your wind-chapped lips.
These down-under dudes already have a couple of demos under their collective belt, which rightly garnered praise from the few cognoscenti who were lucky enough to have heard them. To get right to it: Ahkmed promulgate a delicious deserty mix with lots of heavy spice. Kyuss may be the main ingredient, but there are liberal helpings of space rock a la Hawkwind, King of the Road California vibing, Washington grunge, and some stoned-out nodding from the Stooges and Hellacopters. Mmm mmm good! Tastes as good as it sounds, which is very good indeed.
'Gimme Something' is a relaxed, loping tune in the Kyuss vein, with some heavy space vocals. As you might guess from the title, 'Fuzzbox Muffjungle' takes it north to Washington State, for some old school Mudhoney in a rumble with the Stooges. 'Chicken of the Cee' is a stretched out instro from the desert with some creepy whispered vocals and Hawkwind-inspired synths soaring around the edges. 'Keen Whippersnapper' brings it all home, an excellent melding of all of the above into a seamless whole.
OK, so you've heard it before. But never quite like this. Ahkmed is all about blending the blues, desert rock, and space rock into a program that is nothing but their own. Dig it!
