T.H.U.M.B. Overloaded Rock n' Roll (Psychodestroyer/Brainstorm)
by Kevin McHugh
T.H.U.M.B., which is an acronym for The Hidden Unknown Meaning Behind, are a two-man, one-woman power trio from Italy who are into kickin' it old school. Yes, it may seem hard to believe to those of us who've been in the stoner/doom community for years, but some now consider the late 90s to be old school.
By ‘old school’ I mean that Kyuss-y/Swedish fuzzed out sound that got so many of us into (or back into) heavy tuneage 4 or 5 years ago. After many lineup and sound changes, T.H.U.M.B. have settled into this classic sound, with a lowdown, spaced, sneering groove that's perfectly comfortable shaking the walls out in the garage, surrounded by whisky stains and a haze of smoke. 'Devil Woman' features that classic stoner guitar fuzz with a decidedly Swedish sound, chock full of basic, head-banging riffs and fluid leads. All the right ingredients. ‘Echoes & Daemons’ has a loping beat sure to please Nebula lovers, with lots of spacey filtered vocals. 'Sickin' shows that T.H.U.M.B. can pound it up tempo and hard, in case you were feeling too zoned out and comfortable.
The only criticism I have is that the vocals are occasionally too far back in the mix. Otherwise, T.H.U.M.B. shows that they can invoke the spirit of the glory days via sounds that compare favorably to Dozer, Nebula, or the Awesome Machine. In these days of sludge, southern fried, or whatever bandwagon-jumping trendoids, that can be refreshing.
