Phased – Music for Gentlemen
Review by: Kevin McHugh
Lux-Noise
Release date: Available Now
Phased are a multinational group with members from Sweden, Switzerland, and Finland. Whatever, ‘cause these Sandoz-heads might as well be based on one of the moons of Saturn for all it matters. Brothers and sisters of The Void, Phased takes a big ole’ cauldron of bubbling MC5 energy and stirs in a nightmarish blend of classic space rock influences to create a euphoric blend indeed. So sip carefully, and do not operate heavy machinery after partaking.
‘Alien Think Tank’ starts the engines with a simple, driving, propulsive riff that Nebula freaks will cotton onto immediately, before mixing in some riffage directly from Hawkwind’s classic ‘Hassan I Sabba.’ OK, we’re definitely on the same page here. ‘His Sordid Past’ delves further back into the Hawkwind canon, stealing a bit of the trancy feel of ‘Time we Left’ or the infamous ‘We Do It’ jams. Yep, the name of the game is trance through looooooooong repitition here, and it works, just like the old days. Oh yeah, and its heavy as hell, in case you were wondering. ‘Continuously Well’ is doomy, fuzzed-out, and spacey, while ‘Like a Bomb’ has a majestic spacey riff with curiously Devo-like vocals. And lest anyone think we’re getting all serious, there’s the mind death jamming of ‘Woke up This Morning and Gave Myself Head.’ Whadda song title. Whadda concept.
Phased has provided the perfect soundtrack to a zero-g mosh on a retro starliner to Proxima Centuri. Don’t forget the chemicals, or risk being labeled a square forever! While you’re loading up, place this one in rotation with Farflung, Datura, Gas Giant, Nik Turner, and lets not forget the mighty space fathers, Hawkwind. Solid.
