THE DAMES Divorce (Angry Seed)
By Brad Larter
Divorce ushers in a devastatingly raw and ugly mix of bastardized punk rock riffs, heavy metal and distorted sense of melody. Tunes like ‘Seance’ and ‘The Broken-Brained Rebellion’ are groove laden riff monsters while songs like ‘Outside’ infiltrate your headspace with its sure sense of melody. ‘Nurse’ takes on a mellower vibe, making its point known through hypnotic fuzztone guitars and the occasional handclap. Alternating between solid angular riffing that shouts out evil and a restrained melodic refrain, ‘The Masochist’ is achingly gorgeous and broodingly dark all at once.
Keeping things plenty heavy, Tony’s tortured, grinding death vocals of ‘Embryological Recapitulation’ hang menacingly over lightning-quick, thrash metal riffing. The Dames are much heavier than the punk rock that informs much of the record. There is an undeniable sense of melody present throughout Divorce, yet it is the bleak mood and the overall dense, raw sound that really dominates this album.
