Denmark’s Gas Giant is one of the premier exponents of 21st century space rock played by very stoned musicians, on or off the planet. Their first album, ‘Pleasant Journey to Heavy Tunes,’ was a fantastically heavy, trippy blend of Hawkwind, Floyd, Sabbath, and Kyuss. Heavy tunes such as the anthemic ‘Too Stoned’ and ‘Down the Highway’ remain unforgettable wake n’ bake classics.
I liked ‘Pleasant Journey’ so much that I opted to purchase their extremely limited edition of live albums that came out shortly after ‘Pleasant.’ At the time I just couldn’t get enough of their trippy goodness, and the live albums didn’t disappoint. So after all this, I was a little worried that Gas Giant could survive the ensuing years and a label change with their integrity intact. I mean, how often can you fly that high without frying your synapses like bacon? The answer is at least one more time. If you liked their first album, you’ll love ‘Mana.’ All the musical goodies from the first go ‘round are intact. This time they’ve added a greater variety of instruments and an increased sense of dynamics, all to good effect. So along with the expected influences from Hendrix, Kyuss, Sabbath, and Floyd, we also get a taste of darker varieties of metal, tribal stomps, and even some acoustic guitars. But first and foremost is the blistering, all-out heavy and tripping space rock!!
Gas Giant was wise to sign with Stefan Koglek’s Elektrohash label. If their first four releases are anything to go by, Stefan has a sensitive ear for music of the highest quality. Hell, he may even be on ‘Mana’ for all I know, since he’s lent his guitar-playing skills to other Elektrohash releases. I don’t know, because my promo copy didn’t have that information. In any case, this superb album is being released in two versions; vinyl (reportedly with a different mix) and CD (with 4 extra songs). You’ll want both, just as I do. Feed your head!
