Review by Matt Frighetto Spindrift - Ends of the Earth. e.p indie.
Spindrift, Well what can i say? These guys smoke!! This four piece young band, have everything and are probably the best band within the Melbourne scene at present. I have seen Spindrift three times in the last month and every show they play, the tighter and perhaps better they sound. This five track cd e.p has some great hooks and big, big riffs ranging from the sounds of Kyuss to the energy of Astroqueen. Vocals are very similar to John Garcia, infact you would almost think he was singing in the band. Musically, Spindrift are awesome, with full blown heavy fuzz rock riffs and great die downs, that build back up to a climax of great fuzz rock action. Track listings are. Slow Right Down Broken Away Ends of the Earth Old Man Tobias Dragon Fly Hidden Track (Big Bikes Kyuss) Stand out Tracks for me are Broken Away and Ends of the Earth. Ends of the Earth will be soon be up for download in our Indie band search so download it and check it out!!!!! This is a great release and i am sure Spindrift will be surprising us all in the near future with some more great rock. 9/10 e.mail spindrift@stonerrock.net

Thanks to Brad for this one:-) Straight from the outset of the End's of the Earth E.p the attentive listener should be aware of Spindrift's roots. A sample of (what sounds like an interview), with heavy rock icon Ozzy Osbourne precedes the 5 track heavy fuzz-rock onslaught that follows. Oh, so Spindrift is another Sabbath clone you say - well they are in fact far from it! The first thing that captures my attention that captures my attention is the thickness of the sound that has been achieved by the two guitarists in this young band. Without a doubt Spindrift's sound is dominated by heaps of 70's inspired fuzz guitar riffs. I start getting into track one on the E.p and I realise hey- man this vocalist sounds a lot like John Garcia of Kyuss fame. The vocalist has even developed his phrasing in such a way so as to sound a lot like John Garcia. Back to track one - some very cool, catchy driving guitars and heavy drums makes this a great track to open the E.p with. Track two is quite a lengthy track during which the band pulls back on the tempo creating a die down passage part way through the track. This part of the track exemplifies Spindrift's musical creativity and is definitely one of the bands strengths. Track three is the title track of the E.p and rightly so is the stand out track of the E.p. The vocals on this track are strong and soar over the top of fuzzy rhythm guitar and heavy pounding bass guitar. Mid-way through the song the vocals give way to dueling guitars with some impressive fret work from the lead guitar. Track four features a very in ya face fuzz bass which takes over as the dominant instrument in the song. This track is completely instrumental. The lack of vocals is not really apparent as by themselves the instruments are all that is needed to do the talking. Once again the strength of Spindrift comes to the fore part way through this track as a soundscape of psychedelic guitars mesmorise the listener into a state of tranquility. This state is however short lived as the song builds up again by a ear shattering bottom end and very heavy guitars. Track five sees the return of vocals to the equation. This track reminds me of fellow stoner rockers Rollerball's approach to song writing. The guitars are very sabbbath-esque and a guitar break towards the end of the song depicts some creative fret work. The style of this song is a lot more relaxed - even simple I guess - yet it all sticks together really well! The Ends of the Earth E.p also sees Spindrift take on a big ask - yep they have covered a Kyuss song! Spindrift does a cover version of Big Bikes off Kyuss' 1991 release Wretch. The guys have done a great job at emulating one of the seminal stoner bands of the '90's. Ends of the Earth E.p is quite a raw recording yet for such a young band who has done everything off their own backs they deserve full credit for their achievments!
