Finally got my hands on a copy of the brand new Subversion record ‘beatin’ the shit out of it’. I don’t profess to be an expert on doom/sludgecore (whatever you want to call it) by any means, so forgive me if all you doom fans were expecting a more detailed review. I think this review may have been one that was best left to ‘Father_Doom’! Hahaha
Ah well here goes…Following the success in the underground doom scene of their first full-length record ‘Rust Formation’ Subversion bring forth their second offering to feature on the Daredevil label.
The aptly titled ‘beatin’ the shit out of it’ features 6 agressively sludgy tracks that are all quite lengthy. Track four on the CD is a cover version of ‘the track subversion’ that was originally recorded by New Orleans sludge metal band Crowbar. It now becomes obvious from where these German heavyweights of doom scored their name Subversion.
For those of you who like you music enormously heavy & groovy track six ‘tons of tar’ is for you! It takes on a slightly different sound and features oppressively slow groovin’ down-tuned sludgy guitars.
Subversion pound out a brutally heavy, slow grinding sound that draws obvious comparisons to bands such as Eyehategod and even C.O.C. The vocals on this CD compliment the shear power of the rhythm section and the grinding wall of riffery that is produced by guitarist Sandro Uhlmann. The intense vocals are harsh and unrelenting and to my ear the vocals draw comparison to those of Texas metallers Pantera.
This album is raw uncompromising doom! The album was recorded in Subversion’s own studio and the result is one of the heaviest and most brutal recordings to come from the German label Daredevil.
Track listing:
1. scratch
2. jc on welfare
3. losing race
4. subversion
5. outta here
6. tons of tar
