After some hard work releasing two independent e.p’s Swedish band Sub Second Rocket was wisely snapped up by German label Daredevil Records late last year. Recorded in Malmo Sweden, ‘Horsepower’ is the title of this four piece’s official debut that was released in January.
Sit back and enjoy the ride this band take you on throughout the seven tracks on this disc and you can almost picture yourself cruising in a classic ’67 Firebird loaded with 300Hp!
Track one ‘Deff’ eases you into the record with a gentle melodic intro that is followed by some heavy…heavy grooves that are driven along by bassist Daniel Melkersson.
The second track ‘Desert Pearl’ feature almost nu-metal sounding guitars with a psychedelic vibe that flow over amidst rumbling kyussian grooves. The track changes tempo throughout taking some interesting twists when you least expect.
‘Blue Fox’ is a standout track with a psychedelic intro that turns into fuzzed out pounding stoned grooves. ‘Stoner rock’ yeah – but it still manages to retain that psychedelic vibe. Peter’s vocals are right up there in the mix and with the raw power of those grooves behind him it makes for some good speaker rumbling action!
‘Broken Jaw’ starts off with some heavy trudging Sabbath inspired grooves and organic sounding drumming from Ola. From there on the song reverts back and fourth between heavy jazzy grooves and splashes of that same nu-metal tinged psychedelia. There is even a bit of twin guitar action thrown in there for good measure.
It is Sub Second Rocket’s diversity in influences that sets them apart from other bands that try ever so hard to replicate the sound of stoner pioneers Kyuss. Horsepower is a great release. Sub Second Rocket has an impressive creative range, delivering heavy grooves that are accentuated by nu-metal guitars and a psychedelic vibe. The only thing that disappointed me was the short running time of 29.21 minutes.
Track Listing:
1. Deff
2. Desert Pearl
3. Big Fat No
4. Blue Fox
5. Death Roll
6. Broken Jaw
7. Horsepowers
