Yeaaah!…screams Torben Egebjerg amidst the heavy stoner grooves that emanate from the Maginified Eye rhythm section. The track to which I am referring is ‘On the edge of a Stone’. This track is the first track off Magnified Eye’s official debut release titled ‘The Last Sun’. Magnified Eye are four guys are from Norway and Denmark.
Torben’s vocals are powerful yet at times very moody and are reminiscent of Tool’s vocalist Maynard. Track two on this ten-track release ‘Keep Distance’ really makes this evident and has a very fat slow groovin’, fuzz laden riff that just keeps on chugging along.
There is a lot of depth to Magnified Eye’s sound. The title track of this release heads down a slightly different path to the tracks that precede it. ‘The Last Sun’ features a bluesy harmonica and fine acoustic guitar work that is accompanied by ever-present bass heavy grooves.
‘No Big Deal’ is a straight ahead rockin’ track taking on board liberal doses of Unida energy to create a sound that fits the typical ‘stonerrock’ mould. Following the energy of the previous track ‘Alcoholic Haze’ is initially very laid back with minimalist vocals that are buried into the mix of swirling spacey guitars and drums. This laid back feel soon gives way to a thunderous wall of sound as Klaus’ guitar wails over trudging bass grooves from Torben Raven.
There is an underlying moody metal element to the sound of ‘The Last Sun’ that I just can’t put my finger on. The last track on the cd ‘Zero Gravity’ really manages to capture the intensity of this mood with searing doubled guitars and a heavy bass line that just keeps on rolling over and over putting the listener into a spaced out trance. Torben’s vocals are once again ever present and accentuated by some trippy psychedelic studio effects.
Magnified Eye is a well-produced debut effort for these Scandinavian boys that will be sure to capture some attention. I look forward to hearing some new material in the future.
