Turned up late and didn't hang around to see Dern Rutlidge, so I won't even bother with a proper review, but what I will say is damn, the place was absolutely chock-a-block! Admittedly there were the usual "Espy People" (i.e various groups of people who seem to live at the Espy and never seem to go see gigs at the Tote, Arthouse, etc.) but quite a few were getting right into Forte. I've seen a steady increase in numbers at Forte gigs in Melbourne, and it's great to see their heavy touring schedule down here paying off. Their set was tight and you needn't worry Writhe, that bottom and is well and truly still there. Who knows, maybe the pendulum is swinging back to true rock music.........

This was an awesome show - don't worry mush you didn't miss anything coming late the first band were pretty dodgy and uninteresting. Like you and maxi I am sick of Dern and find them pretty monotonous these days so I didn't stick around. Kudos to Forte for sticking to it and gigging so regularly down here - they are earning the support and following that they deserve. Forte's new songs are sounding great, their sound is getting bigger and bigger (anyone see the number of pedals the guitarist on the left uses? - A whole bloody suitcase!!) and they're definately enjoying themselves. Only criticism I could make (cause I always have to have one) was the extreme reverb on the snare drum - a little over the top? Great show though and I'll continue seeing these guys every time they come down - can't wait for FuManchu!! And yeh maxi, they sound a little like Goblin in parts, very much like Monster Magnet in others (especially vocals) and yet I think all these comparisons are merely a credit to their song-writing and musical taste/ability. Couldn't be considered unoriginal - just equal with all the music we love from OS.

Little bit of slayer going on there too maybe? Or is that drawing too long a bow?

Nah, I can see that mush - probably more in the drumming than anything else? Deon is a kisck-arse skinsman.
That is the beauty of Forte - they comprise the best parts of some of my favourite bands, while coming across as completely original.

I agree with the sentiments of maxi and f-rock in that Dern would do well to bring a bunch of new tracks into their set. They have been pushing the same bunch of songs for a while now, although they have added 1 new track (which is a top track by the way) I reckon they could do more to motivate the punters to come see em time and again. Word is that there has been a bunch of new tracks written and they should be rolling em out soon. Couldnt be soon enough for me and by the sounds of things here a few other regular punters have the same thoughts. Maybe the high voltage gig would be a good opportunity to roll out some newies...

That High Voltage gig should be awesome. But the only bands that I can really be sure of playing at this stage is Earth and Dern - which isn't a bad start. Anyone know any more?
And I promise you Clint, oh brave defender of the Dern, that i will go in with a completely open mind and see what they can come up with.
