The Australian summer is such a strange beast. Floods in Queensland, cold weather in Victoria, and all-seasons each day in NSW. Is it climate change? Is it the Gods reminding us who's in control? Is it a subtle hint to stay inside and check out the latest Sound Monitor update?
Whatever it is, the latter option certainly adds some decent entertainment to the equation. There's new reviews of Alexisonfire, Give Up The Ghost, Ramesses / Negative Reaction (split) and Rawjaw. Log on to find out about Halo's alter-ego Mass Transit Corporation, the 20th anniversary of the greatest rock band in existence (that's The Melvins, of course), and why High Beam Music's Jeb loves his Nutrigrain.
And we announce the winners of our December Clann Zu competition... results listed in the news section.
The links have been updated and I ironed out a few glitches I came across.
'Til next week.... have a great summer/winter/autumn/ or spring depending on the day of the week!)

25/01/04What's up? How's those New Year Resolutions going? They workin' for ya? Huh?!... Well, if one of your resolutions was to get hip and cool then what better way to keep that resolution than head over to www.thesoundmonitor.com and get the lowdown on all that's happening in the world of rock. You could impress your friends by discussing the new reviews of How Machines Work, and Darediablo. You could tell those unhip friends of yours the latest happenings at Ipecac, and Set Fire To My Home. You could even drop witty remarks about the staff at the sound monitor and how you have more street-cred than the editor who once liked the Culture Club. You would know this because you checked out the updated staff section which tells you all sorts of tidbits about the world's best rock writers. And you could even tell your friends that if they wanna be hip like you, then they'd better get on over to thesoundmonitor.com quicksmart, and download like a mo'fo' 'cos, come next week the current hip mp3s will be gone, skamoosh.... nada... zip...

01/02/04So, are you sick of the new site yet? Looking a bit drab? Tired of the same ol' same ol'? Well you're a bloody picky bunch then, aren't ya?! I mean really... It's only a month old, this new look soundmonitor site of ours, and already you want something new, fresh and exciting. It just goes to show that we're all a part of this well-oiled pop-culture, microwave generation, that knows what we want and when we damn well want it... which is NOW dumbledorf! Well, far be it for me to stand in the way of progress. You want your update, you got it. Don't believe me? Then head over to www.thesoundmonitor.com to witness for yourself some rather splended reviews for Shovelhead, Perish The Thought / Means To An End (split), Strength Within, Theory of Ruin, Fu Manchu, Mountain Mirrors, as well as Album of the Month by the legendary X, Demo of the Month by the mindblowing Knives of Neptune, and a forgotten classic by Bevis Frond. And then check out the new feature on AgaugeFor (finally), and some rather grand MP3's from some of the above bands, and others.... What else could one ask for? Well how about new prizes, which, if you received this newsletter in your email you are in the running for. It's a fabulous and rather scary pack from the fabulous and rather scary folk at Relapse, where they do all that grind and death metal stuff... (grrrr!!!!) Plus there's some added news to keep you abreast of all that is good in the rock world.... And remember the site is updated weekly, so check back often for more stuff, and quit your complainin'! Peace & Prayers Warren Wheeler - THE SOUND MONITOR

8/2/04
Another week, another update. But this ain't no ordinary update. We figured you should've read the interviews by now, so we posted two more - just to keep you on your toes. Nathan had words with stonerrockers Devil To Pay, while I had a little convo. with hardcore giants Against.
There's new reviews of noise/ambient artist JSchizoid, the mind-numbingly heavy PelicanT, the torturous The End, and Swedish stoners Mount Caravan.
There's a couple of added playlists and new news on Clutch and Hiretsukan.
Don't forget this upcoming weekend is Valentines, and what better way to show your true feelings to your partner than leaving them at home while you go check out the What Is Music? Festival, or catch KT26ers and Timid Joe (if you're in Brissy), or if you're in Sydney, the Valentines Massacre is on. Check site for details.
Til next week...
Peace & Prayers Warren

"Our website brings the boys to the yard" In the tradition of that classic Kelis tune The Sound Monitor also brings the boys (and grrls) to the yard with fresh, supple reviews of retro-rockers America Owns The Moon, the validity-questioning Harpoontang, Canadian dissident Greg MacPherson, Aussie crushers Pillow, and the humourous Mr Plow, along with Album of the Month for Mezzanine~C14's He Keeps Silent & Sacrifices Himself, the Demo of the Month by Toronto-based ThunderHawk and a retro-review of everyone's favourite hardcore fascists SOD. Plus, we have mp3's that'll bring the boys (and grrls) to the yard by some of the aforementioned acts, as well as a few who'll be reviewed throughout the month of March. There's news on Judas Priest's Dave Holland who abused his trust much like many other priests, new tour dates for Sick Of It All, Entombed and Jet, a supergroup from the depths of hell itself (think Melvins, Napalm Death and Brutal Truth) and the latest from the Netherland's best The Gathering. With more to come.... wheew! I'm feeling all hot and sensual like Kelis again... "my milkshake brings the boys to the yard..." oh what a song! brilliant in every aspect... hooks, melodies, production, packaging, concept.... asalaam aleikum... Warren Wheeler - THE SOUND MONITOR

Some wise-arse once said that change is as good as a holiday. Well, i'm officially on holidays right now, but I've found myself being busier than ever, due to this wonderful tertiary requirement of "vocational education" or "work placement". Actually, it's quite good, but it's certainly no holiday.
So, seeing as though my holiday has been hijacked, I've done some changing. Firstly I changed my office. Found some lost CDs, threw out a tonne of bios, and stepped on the odd stray staple.
This change in scenery prompted a change in splash at the site's default page. Hope you like it. It's almost hardcopy quality?!
Then I went and added three - yes count them, 1, 2, 3... new interviews. There's my little one with Time In Malta, there's Matt's rip-snorter of a q&a with greatdayforup, and Nath's bloody trippin' expose on Lord Sterling.
And if that's not enough, we got good ol' Kev to write a Lord Sterling review for album of the month, Nathan jupmed back on the ol' qwerty to do Dolls of Damnation as demo of the month... AND he gives a VERY personal retro review for Faith No More's Angel Dust. (I know... I work 'em hard don;t I?)
OK... so the regular reviews this week are the greatdayforup/Solace split that Matt just raves about, Time In Malta, PTB, Off Minor (who're touring btw), Midnite Snake (ya gotta check these fuzzy jammers out!) and The Psychedelic Avengers, who... well, just read the review... it's bizarre!
A bunch of new downloads... well, external links to downloads - it's easier and savesd me time!
PLUS! We have a new way to win stuff. We;re asking for our readers to vote for their latest fave albums and every month we'll compile the votes and pick a winner. This month there'll be two lucky winners who'll either get a copy of Fu Manchu's Something beyond EP or Motorpsycho's It's a Love Cult.
So send in your vote, and be sure to tell us which CD you want - the Fu's or the 'Psychos?
Til next time.... ciao (as Georgie Negus would say)
