The Gutter is a pretty intimate venue. There is no stage so the band play on the floor right in your face. There was a reasonable turn out of people to see chick punkers Gazoonga Attack kick-off pretty late. Two or three songs passed before they got their sound properly mixed but once they did it was all out punk rock fury from these chicks!
With growing support and a heap of recent local airplay the Aampirellas are really starting to grow in confidence. The Aamper's vocalist Trixie had a hard time competing with the volume of the guys overdriven guitars which were drenched in feedback and blaring from the PA. With a few more mixing tweaks to improve Trixie vocals the Aampirellas were soon rockin' the way they should!
Sharing the vocal duties with Trixie, Evil Dick took over with his typically raw, sleazy vocal stylings only to be interrupted by a broken guitar string. It actually turned out that he set a new personal record of three broken strings while using two different guitars throughout the set!
Coming on real late Warped started to play and within minutes they had the crowd in the palms of their hands. These guys get up to all sorts of crazy rock 'n' roll antics. Warped bassist Brett is a fuckin' hyperactive maniac - man! These guys must have the longest leads in Australian rock 'n' roll as Brett and Ben were both in the crowd's faces throughout the whole set. Brett ran/tumbled/lurched into the crowd at times jumping up on the bar, taking swigs of beer and blowing it back in the crowd's faces.
Ben has a swag of rock 'n' roll riffs at his finger tips and he definitely wasn't shy about letting copious amounts of lead guitar breaks rip at a moments notice! He also joined in the antics - rolling around on the floor, pushing and being pushed around by the crowd throughout their set.
The guys wound up their set playing some new songs from their forthcoming single. At one stage late in their set, drenching in sweat and beer Brett was rolling around on the ground wrestling with one of the Gazoonga Attack chicks while somehow still managing to play his bass. He still had to go one better though...Brett ran out the door of the Gutter bar into the beer garden and jumped up of the pool table jeering at the few people who were outside.
Last night was a great night of rock 'n' roll and I will definitely not hesistate to go see Warped again if they decide to travel back up here to Brisbane sometime soon.
