Legends of Motorsport---The Drones--Fort Mary--
@ The Tote, Friday 27/9/02
Kicking off the night was Fort Mary, a band who have played shows non-stop for the past year or so. These guys played to a small but gathering crowd at the Tote, blasting through their songs, playing like it was their last gig. These guys have so much energy on stage - with the drummer very frequently falling of his drum stool in action, the guitarist/singer thrashing himself around, balancing precariously on the kick drum while playing and sporadically running off stage and into the crowd mid-song, and the bass player steady-as-a-rock, holding the whole shebang together. These guys have a definite garage-rock influence, but to see them live with the crazy show - even if you don't dig the songs - the energy is worth paying the bucks for.
Next up were The Drones, playing to a gradually filling Tote. A 4-piece band comprising swirly guitars and noise with a rock edge. At times I think that the mix may have sounded a bit scary, but their intricate songs stood out. I really do think that this band is going to do well, they are already hot on the trail of some damn fine gigs and plenty more in Melbourne, so definitely go check 'em out. Definitely intriguing.
Lastly, Legends of Motorsport blasted the stage (and almost the speakers) with yet another awesome set. Ripping through a couple of oldies and songs from their latest Beef With Cheese EP, (the title fits these guys to a tea), they played a great show full of chunky, beefy guitars, funky drums and seriously rockin' keys with intense, but very catchy vocals on the verge of Frankenfurter. I seriously beleive that this band has way more guts than a lot of other bands at the moment - they have stuck to their guns since day one - and can still pull it off nicely, I might add - and they haven't compromised their music for what ever is 'in' at the moment - ie. *stoner rock* (whatever that is) These guys show us that originality is still live and well in the Melbourne music scene - who else would get up on stage in parachute suits and FBI sunglasses??!! However, the gig was sort of...*quiet*. Not as in the band but as in the audience, they seemed a bit too cool for school at the show. THESE GUYS ARE FUCKING AWESOME!! C'mon! what is wrong with people? The last few shows I've seen of these guys, the crowd has been crazy, but on Friday they seemed very sedated. Maybe it was because everyone was gearing up for the Grand Final...well if that's the case, fuck the grand final and go and enjoy the rock
*and the whole team played well*
