First, a little backround information. As a fan of the band Monster Magnet I started listening to The Atomic Bitchwax, a side project of Monster Magnet's lead guitarist Ed Mundell. Sensing the imminent breakup of Bitchwax, bassist and singer Chris Kosnik formed Black Nasa. Joining him is Duane Hutter, on guitars and harmonica and Corey Stubblefield on drums. To be honest, because Ed Mundell was the focus of my interest in Bitchwax, I was unsure if Black Nasa could move me. Well they do.
I am a total sucker for slide guitar, I love it, so from the opening track my mind was open. From the pyschedelic blues of "I Don't Have To Hide", to the synth heavy "Hot Van" and the high octane "Monkey Knife Fight" I was hooked. The highlight of this cd for me is "Walkin, Talkin, Blackout Mode", which showcases the musical capabilities and obvious musicianship among all the members in this band. Ending this, 9 track, 37 minute and 14 second, cd is the hard and heavy, "El Segundo" that is guaranteed to leave you wanting more.
The absence of Ed Mundell was not an issue for me at all and Chris Kosnik, as well as the other members of Black Nasa, should feel proud of this band and the new sound they have created together. I'm glad it didn't just turn out to be Atomic Bitchwax Jr. I recommend this cd to lovers of stoner rock and I am excited about what the future holds for this band.
