Saturday night I saw Hoss @ The Rob Roy in Fitzroy, Melbourne. The venue itself was quite interesting, it has a vague ‘David Lynch’ feel, small band room, comfy couches throughout. The crowd was small-ish, but the size of the room made it feel like there were more punters than actually there. Hoss have gone through some changes since their reformation, a new drummer and a sound that’s a little more bluesy, less bottom end and subsequently not quite as heavy. They still sound good, but are lacking the grunt of 9 or 10 years ago. I’m not sure what % of their 2 sets was newer material, I did recognise a number of songs and the highlight for me was their rendition of ‘brown sugar’ (off the ‘You get Nothing’ album), which still retained plenty of the old power. A friend there compared them to The Real Kids (70/80’s NYC bluesy punk ), but not being overly familiar with them I can’t comment on that. It was solid show from some great muso’s and definitely worth the price admission. Anyone unfamiliar with Hoss should have a listen to the ‘bring on the juice’ or 'you get nothing' albums on Dogmeat Records, my fave track being ‘token kiss’ on 'botj'. I’d reckon anyone wanting to score copies should be able to find them in the 2nd hand or cheap bins.

It'd be a damn shame to find any Hoss cd's in the 2nd hand/cheapy bin, 'cos they are one of Australia's finest bands. All their rekkids cannot be recommended enough!
Good to see they are still at it as well - one band that just rocks without the hype and bullshit, and Joel is more of a songwriting legend than Tim Rogers!
I last saw 'em live in Melbourne at the punters club in 1997 when a band I was in supported them, and they were friggin' excellent.
Bring On The Juice / Cave Me In / Do You Leave Hre Often / Everyday Lies / You Get Nothing all still get regular playing in my house!!, and as for GOD...... forget silverchair being young geniuii (??), how old were they (Joel, Tim etc) back in 1986??
