I turned up at about 10pm last Wednesday night at the Ox, made damn sure i avoided local band RPM like the plague, got some beers in and kept my ears and mind open.
A couple of interesting points first off -- the Oxford was packed, more so than most gigs i can remember there in the past few years -- and there was a $5 cover charge. Why is this? Are Cog really that well known and popular, is it hype or do people just assume that a $5 cover charge guarantees a good band ?
Second, the drumkit took up the entire stage, so the other two guys had to play offstage.....i can understand the Oxford stage is a little small, but come on. Still, probably a good thing, as the drums saved the band in my opinion.
I really really enjoyed Cog. I really did. Really. But for the entire time, i felt a little cheated. Their songs were complex, heavy, they had a fantastic sound, the energy level was amazing, their drummer was mind-blowing and the other musicians are no slouches either, but.
They are the most derivative band i have ever seen. They may as well have been playing the unreleased 4th Tool album note for note. Not an ounce of originality i'm afraid. Maybe i think about these things too much and it hinders my enjoyment of a good rock band, but this really bothers me.
Anyone else get the same impression, or am i all alone here?
Malkmus.

I've tried really hard to like these guys. They've got a lot of the "right" elements: complex songs, moody atmosphere, and top notch drumming.
But .... everytime I see them or listen to their EP, I am left with an empty feeing. They bore me and frustrate me at the same time.
the drumming is AWESOME though.

Must be time for me to stick my head in on this one.
Cog are creating hype, but it's not a Vines-esque kind of hype. They are getting known for being bloody good.
On the Tool thing.....yeah, they are very heavily influenced by Tool, but I'd hardly call them a Tool copy-cat band, there are a lot of other influences there as well.
Just in case you've forgotten: Mind Riot 1st Nov at the Espy with COG.

You're on the money with that one Malkmus, if only they got into a groove once in a while rather than trying to fuck with your head with crazy ass timings and having every one moving like a bunch of retards tryimg to keep the beat...whatever...they were ok.
nup, they pissed me off......

, Now lets not start generalising here people. I've heard some incredible mind fuck doof in my time and as for Cog... Well I've seen them a couple of times and I enjoyed their P.I.L. cover but all of the above I reckon. Not a fan, I don't believe you should have to try to appreciate a band or try to enjoy something you either do or you don't and Cog don't grab me either way. That Tool thing might have a small part to play seeing as though I find them pretty ordinary but I think Housemon nailed it with that lack of groove call. LAck of groove=lack of catchiness lack of catchiness means I forget all about it in the morning. Technical brilliance may impress fellow musicians but the general public mainly don't get it. Still there is no denying Cog are doing stuff (or they have a fantastic publicist) or the fact that there isn't an Australian Tool Show or. No I'll leave before it gets nasty... ;D

I do agree in that Cog seem to try and force time signatures together, at the expense of The Big Hook. I don't necessarily think that's such a bad thing in general though -- some of my favourite muso's do that (Zappa, Beefheart etc). It just didn't work for me, that's all. OK i'll shut up about Cog now --- there's plenty of other bands more deserving of my eternal hatred. iOTA anyone? Malkmus.
