So I headed off to The Tote on what was a fairly fucking hot Friday night here in Melbourne. 39 or something during the day, minimum of 30 overnight and all the way up to 44 on Saturday, so when I say 'fucking hot', it's no exaggeration. Anyway, those of you who have been to The Tote know that it isn't one of Melbourne's biggest proponents of ventilation, and when it's packed both inside and out in the beer garden; it boils.
Unfortunately I spent too much time sitting in front of a fan and got there too late to catch Cockfight Shootout (I will see those guys one day) and The Band Who's Name I Can't Remember, but was just in time for Stiff Meat. It was already pretty full in there and it looked like it was seriously hot on-stage, but they had a very good set and threw in a couple of new ones. It could have been where I was standing (as close to the bar as possible - the beer got hot in your hand by the time you walked to the other side of the room), but the sound seemed to lack a bit of definition. On a side note; there's nothing quite as disturbing (and piss-funny) as seeing a couple of barely 18 year old girls singing along to 'Your car's a piece of shit and I want to fuck your girlfriend'.
After a couple of almost-cold beers, some fresh air, and spliff smoke out in the beer garden, it was time for Blood Duster. The room totally packed out and turned into some kind of sick Japanese game show: chuck a couple of hundred people into a small room with no ventilation on the hottest night of the year, put a metal band on, and the band member to throw in the towel first loses.
I didn't notice it at first - actually, I didn't notice it until it was pointed out - but Jimbo from Stiff Meat was filling in for JJ on guitar, and I've gotta say he did a bloody good job. Standing in the crowd was bad enough, but I can't imagine how hot it would've been under the lights, although by my count there was only one working light left on the front rig halfway through the set. The place was going fairly berserk from what I could see, the last couple of Duster gigs I've been to were pretty tame, so it was good to see, although Tony didn't look like he enjoyed being pulled into the crowd all that much.
Anyway, to sum up a 'fuck I'm bored at work post-long weekend' rant some shit got broken, it was fucking hot, Blood Duster were as good and funny as ever, and last but not least, PC got naked.
