;D...O,K, this is a review I promised a couple of drunk rockers who wanted the dirt on a week in the life of Spectator who decided to throw himself a birthweek party.
It starts on a Tuesday night being the first person in line to see PJ Harvey 3 hours before the gig (I know it's dumb but I was excited) anyhow a passing security guard bought me two vanilla cokes which made the timw pass quicker. There is no barrrier and I can't believe I'm going to be an arms length away from Polly!
I was pretty amped to see Tex and The Dark Horses as I dug that disc I dig Tex and well I just bloody well wanted to see it alright. Tex was in a pretty jokey mood having fun with hecklers "Play Psycho Mama. Play Chase The Dragon"...response?
"I'm not here to discuss your mental state and I'm not your mama and if a dragon was chasing me I think I would run away"
So it was a real treat to hear "I Can't Say No" later in the set considering I had held no hope for any Beasts Of Bourbon material. Why is Polly Jean Harvey so cool?
I don't think there is a straight forward answer but who else could get away with playing the wrong chord to the first song of the evening and in a cute english accent explain "Sorry I haven't played guitar for a while lets start that again"!
Heaps of songs off "Dry" and "Rid Of Me" as well as "To Bring You My Love". Did I mention I was that close that I could of licked her legs during 'Rid OF Me"!!!...anyhow Rob Ellis is one of the best live drummers I have ever seen (check the double kick in 50ft Queenie. We aren't even hearing a metal tune here) and it is always a pleasure to see The Bad Seed himself Mick Harvey on bass....I could get more pathetic and explain in fine detail what Polly was wearing, how many times she looked at me, how I'm convinced that.....who let these pissed Monstrous Blues guy out of the house they may be accused of having a good time here!
So then it's Thursday Spectator realises that he is another year older so ofg course mother and sister appear at ungodly hour wielding Red Dwarf videos and lunch invitations and kisses and all of that stuff people do to distract you from thinking another year has passed...after chilling with some pipes a friend presents me with a copy of 25...Tab because of course I should have been listening to this years ago. At this point I still don't have a ticket for QOTSA and I might try my luck at getting in for this or Perry Farrell's DJ set....My awesome friends manage to get me on the doorlist for show and it rocks as I soon found out every QOTSA show (well the 3...count them!) that I saw were all different. Memorable moment tonight? they played Another Love Song and Better Living Through Chemistry (is that the title I can't remember)
After Nick and Josh are cruising the foyer saying hello to people. Apparently Josh is turned away from Perry Farrells show for not having a ticket, I just played in their doesn't get you throught the door in Sydney!
Spectator wakes up and knows now why Cruisers and beer should never go together....
Makes it back to Enmore for another round. Front of barrier again. At this point I have to mention I was surprised to get to front of stage and not die from being crushed to death. Coolest crowds in years...highlight tonight "Quick and To The Pointless" the last tune on Rated R (the headache one that my memory can't recall) and after third 2nd encore drummer looking worked Nick laughing at him Josh dives into drums to put poor bastard out of misery....
See somemore local cats and score lift home. Get really bent and write new songs....
SMS MSG at 9:00 train leaves in 4 minutes where are you....fuck! slept in run to the next town still stoned still asleep make train and by some miracle get to BDO on time!
Start to fry early at Rocket Science as they are as cool as always a short wonder a certain drummer gives Spectator pill for birthday suddenly The Music sound like something I'd dance my ass offf to if it wasn't so fucking hot....enter grandstand crystal takes over. much chatting takes place I can recall Millencollin (hated them) maybe Pacifier (ignored them) Deftones (Cool glad I saw them) Vines (What a joke. Great album shame about the predictable stage show) QOTSA, PJ Harvey, Janes Addiction ( In my top 5 best bands I've seen list. girls on swings, elaborate costumes, and of course those songs)...crowd starts getting to "I'm a pissed fuckwit stage start thinking about leaving...catch a bit of The Foo Fighters and the end of You Am I leave....drugs cause Spectator to tell friend 6-8 hour long story back in Sydney in front of stage and if I die tomorrow at least I can say "Hey I may not be touched by the hand of god but damnit I've touched the hands of Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell...and then I had a psychosis when I got home and boarded up my front door and hid in the dark waiting for....thats another story! ;D
