MELLOWDRONE A Demonstration of Intellectual Property EP (www.mellowdrone.com) Having recently been signed to ArtistsDirect, Johnathon Bates (aka Mellowdrone) thought it a wise marketing move to release this EP as a free download on www.mellowdrone.com. And hey… I fell for it! But certainly not regrettably. A deliberately lo-fi, low-key affair A Demonstration…is a varied recording with all six tracks displaying individuality and depth, each drawing from many modern rock luminaries. Opening with a little Casio-oriented ditty, the EP then wanders into some Radiohead/Mercury Rev territory with ‘Fashionably Uninvited’. Oscillating between light and dark, Bates’ soaring vocals are gripping and passionate alongside a catchy rhythm and tinkling piano riff. ‘And Repeat’ reminds one of the bohemian coolness of the Dandy Warhols with it’s slack riffing and off-kilter vocals, whereas ‘Beautiful Day’ is smeared with Beck styled pop. ‘No More Options’ and ‘Bitelip’ again give nods of appreciation to Radiohead with their epic-like structures – though both tracks are clearly of appropriate radio length. While I’ve never been any good at predicting the next big thing (thus I’d never make a good A&R rep), Mellowdrone possess all the right ingredients to become the next Beck or Badly Drawn Boy.
