KEVEN BRENNAN God Is A Mighty Gourd (fBoo Music)
While I found Brennan’s last effort Revival Tent unpalatable due to it’s inane frivolity, his fourth album, God Is A Mighty Gourd, is a far more appealing affair with it’s dank nuances and improved story-telling. As is obvious by the albums’ title, Brennan continues his theological wordplay as well as his other-worldly tales of pirates, space creatures, fairy tales and Stephen King-esque fiction.
Musically, Brennan is as far removed from rock as most soundmonitor readers would like to identify with, however those with a penchant for the funk a la Frank Zappa and George Clinton may find some value in his career. Through his unique, somewhat child-like perspective, Brennan explores themes of biblical interest, genetic engineering, classic art, and intergalactic pirates.
Eclectic in sound and versatile in musicianship, Brennan employs saxophone and clarinet to the usual guitar/bass/drums/keys arrangement, allowing the spacious funk with black humour to inject the listener with a sense of intelligent idiocy.
