DESIDERII MARGINIS Strife (Cold Meat Industry) Darkwave - as a style and a theory – is a lot more difficult to produce than it first appears. The layering of synthetics, carefully placed industrialized samples and a continuation of atmosphere are intricate, indeed exact sciences. And whilst many a goth kid has come along armed with a keyboard, ProTools and a few Hellhammer movies just as many have failed to deliver quality, disturbingly dark ambience. Thankfully, Desiderii Marginis is not one of those misguided projects, as Strife is brilliant in it’s conceptual darkness and unsettling atmosphere. Based around the concept of conflict – in particular military – Strife provides a journey through fear and terror. Played in a dark room (with the phone off the hook), Strife pans unexpected sounds filling the environment with an unnerving calm. With its minimalist approach, images of violence, war and egoist political power are summonsed, recalling the brilliance of Lull, Darrin Verhagen, and Parca Pace. The desolate packaging and titles contribute to the bleak landscape, conjuring images of post-war destruction and social confusion. The liner notes quote: “Guns go silent only to discover nothing really has been accomplished… Does this sound depressing? I think it is.”<br> So do I… So do I. By Warren Wheeler www.dreamhours.com
