LEGION: Demo 2004 Of all the demos I received this month Legion was perhaps the one I least expected to enjoy. That’s because despite having grown up surrounded by eighties rock I never really latched onto it, preferring instead the aggressiveness of thrash metal. That said, I was nevertheless exposed to the glam rock scene via a number of dedicated friends, who themselves had a thing for flash guitar solos and winklepickers. So when an over-costly presentation of a band is presented to me complete with glamour photo I expectedly cringe.
Well tease my hair and call me Axl, cos Legion ROCK! In that true Motley Crue/Skid Row kinda way, Legion are “putting the cock back into cock rock” (their words, not mine). Well produced and catchy as the ‘Crue or the ‘Row Legion are a Canadian four-piece hell-bent on sex, drigs and rock n’ roll, with tattoos to prove it.
Granted, the opening riff of ‘Bad Blood’ is lifted directly off of Motley Crue’s ‘Kickstart My Heart’, albiet restructured. But is immediately evident that these guys have laboured hard at their craft - a feat nigh impossible in this post-grunge, anti-glam world.
Vocalist (and tambourinist?!) Danny E. Rail could perhaps put a little more oomph into his delivery, but he is nevertheless competent and confident with his role. ‘Child Gone Wild’ displays his talents perfectly as he power-croons alongside riffs that grab you like a curling iron. Lyrically this track si the typical rebellious youth soundtrack to 1988: “I’m a child gone wild, I will always be free!” The tune picks up towards the end with rumbling double-bass courtesy of Darren Evil.
Guitarist TC Davidson shines like Stevie Stevens, in the truly lost art of flash guitar solos, while bassist Kasey Haze appears to contribute to the majority of songwriting – perhaps we have the new Blackie Lawless here?
This is great. Cheesy but great!
