GRISE
The Slanderpuss
(Independent)
Sydney-based Grise waste absolutely no time in informing the listener what they’re all about. Rolling drums, rumbling bass, incongruous feedback, and spewed vocals welcome in the first 20 seconds of their debut effort The Slanderpuss. ‘Clockwork’ - the track associated with this noise – is relatively indicative of the remainder of the disc, obnoxious noise rock in the vein Midget, Tweezer and Hard-Ons with elements of early Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr and Sonic Youth.
The band’s biggest asset is in Jaimey Foti’s incessant bass rumblings, building a solid platform alongside drummer Michael Chambers for the two vocalist/guitarists to simply let loose and aurally destroy witnesses and passers-by alternating between the sublime, considered moments, and the ridiculous, pulverizing assaults.
The dual, male/female vocal attack courtesy of brother Anthony Foti and Jaime Shields adds a unique dimension, with Jaime being compared to a pissed off Adalita (Magic Dirt), scowling with spite and venom, while Anthony plays the character of NYC shoegazer with perfect apathy and convincing laziness.
The swinging bassline of ‘Let Your Lungs Burn’ allows for respite while ‘Take Your Knife’ resurrects distant Unsane with its pounding rhythms and tortured vocal approach. Meanwhile ‘Grin Through Teeth’ exploits repetition to the nth degree before launching into another swinging rhythm offering further respite from the onslaught.
Not since the demise of Black Hole Recordings has Australian noise rock sounded so darn ugly. Indeed, if The Vines had any sense they’d holler Grise’s name from the rooftop before jumping to their proverbial demise.
