JENOAH Morning Is When Jenoah Wakes Up EP (Drive-Thru) Getting off to a slightly awkward start, Jenoah appear capable of something more substantial than they’ve attempted here. Slotting nicely into the emo crowd, the band go for a slightly more Strokes or Hot Hot Heat version with sweet vocals combined with pushed-to-the-back-so-as-not-to-alien-radioplay screams. The structures are jolting with a few free-flowing moments, but clearly not enough to get a groove going. ‘Openly’ starts off with an intro too close to The Beatles’ ‘Tommorrow Never Knows’ for my liking, while ‘Coughing Up Blood’ demonstrates the bands’ inane knack of not delivering going anywhere. The final track, ‘Jamie’ is perhaps the band’s saving grace, as it flows sweetly like Maroon 5, loses the screams and actually builds to something greater. Morning Is When Jenoah Wakes Up feels as though the band is trying too hard to impress both sexes with their Smashing Pumpkins-esque approach - light and fluffy with punchy riffs - but they seem to miss the mark completely.
