SINNER STONE For The Service Of Humanity (Whiskey Records)
What hath The Darkness wrought? If eighties metal wasn’t bad enough in the eighties, there’s a whole batch of new millennia breed dragging out the spandex and big hair to remind us of our sometimes shameful roots. Back then we didn’t know any better. Now there’s no excuse!
West Australia’s Sinner Stone debut EP release is one just screaming with KISS and Aerosmith references with the occasional Van Halen or Dokken undertone. The riffs, lyrics, and packaging are all clearly the result of suspended music-listening habits, which is just tops as the genre readies itself for the imminent revival.
The production of such metal however needs to be more clinical than the quartet are offering, however, as the guitar sounds muddy, a no-no for the style. A bigger budget may sharpen the leads which will improve the bands sound to no end.
There’s also a lack of variety throughout the 5 tracks, with no big-chorused ballads present, or for that matter change in tempo.
There’s also no doubting the timing of this release, as The Darkness prepare the global market for a retro-revival. Could Sinner Stone be the Australians to champion the cause?
