POWERHEAD: Shadow of the Thunderchief
You say tom-ay-tow, I say tom-ahh-tow. You say independent EP, I say demo. Regardless of how you view this disc in terms of format, there’s no ignoring it’s one helluva disc, steeped in stoner history with a strong AusRock mentality.
There’s no denying either the influence that local town heroes Thumlock have had on the group. Hawkwind inspired psychedelia meshes with riff-based rock and non-eventful vocals. The bands drawn out riff structures will please the doomsters, while the riffamania will excite the hardest of rockers.
Typically stoner themes emerge (check song titles such as ‘Hellchick’ and ‘Mustang Fire’) though it would be a misnomer to confine the Sydney trio to such a limited genre.
Elements of Mother Love Bone and The Pursuit of Happiness sneak in, without losing it’s early eighties rock appeal. Even the coverart reflects the period!
Admittedly I thought some of the riffs could be halved in length for snappier tunes, and the production is of obvious demo quality, otherwise a worthy release for rockers of all varieties, with an emphasis on the stoner crowd.
