well, a sunday night ain't always conducive to good rock and roll but tonight proved to be an exception. Even without copious quantities of beer, owing to having to work monday, the night held plenty of great rock to be had down at the Tote.
First up Rockafella, first time I'd seen these guys and the singer gets full marks for the Jehovah's outfit, complete with namebadge Press blurb seemed to be pretty spot on, sort of Jon Spencer/Hellacopters mix, I reckon their better songs were the faster more rockier ones, and there were plenty of those. Kind of lost their way a bit near the end of the set but came back together at the end. Pretty damn good band, high energy levels on stage and would certainly be pulling a bigger crowd next time they come back.
Riffter next up, as usual they were pretty tight, but seemed a bit tired? Karls voice seemed to be suffering a bit, I guess when you sing with the intensity that he has its gotta put a strain on the vocal chords! perhaps the knowledge of long drive back that same night for a couple of them might have had an effect but nonetheless still turned in a good set.
Mustang....hmmm, maybe they should change their name to Mustang Crue so much smoke from their smoke machines that it invaded the front bar and made it very bloody hazy. Good musos, good players, just came across a bit too ego heavy for my liking. Especially the singer. The ole' water on the hair thing, the contrived stage moves, nuff said. Quite a few retreated to the front bar during their set. Including me and the missus.
finally the Blues onstage, as usual Hausmeisters guitar so f*cken loud it just about pinned the ears back a notch (memo, self: don't stand directly in line of blast of his quaddie, oh, and get some frickin earplugs) Crowd returned back to the room for these guys, all traces of ego gone and back to the good old fashioned disgustingly loud rifforama. The lads even looked like they were having a ball on stage. Can't really name many of their songs, but they played a fair few of the album and even opened up with a brand newie. By turns heavy, melodic, and even a pinch of pysch creeping in every now and then the guys are plainly in good form.
All in all a good night had by all and as I sit here tapping this out the permanent tinnitus is just that little bit louder and I feel all the better for it ;D
