Mat Dalby emails me this one night proposing I take the WAMI festival pass off his hands with the view of attending as many WAMI gigs as possible in a ten day period. There are only 70 bands playing over ten days... so I accepted the challenge.
I didn't know how I was going to approach this task. I got my hands on a copy of the gig venues and dates and started from there. I marked in all the bands I was going to see, and then just grabbed my opshop shirts, sneakers, my pen and paper and headed out into the big bad world of the WAMI festival.
The first show I caught was Jed Whitey and Jebediah at the Hyde Park Hotel (this was also the night of the industry dinner: a heap of muso's, manangers, reviewers and stuff). The show was 'meant' to start at 8 but this was not to be. An undercrowded Hyde Park venue grumbled about not being able to find the front doors, about the bands being late and so on and so forth.
Finally at 9.30 Jed Whitey hit the floor and what can I say?...Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck, proudly sponsored by Fuck, what are we gonna do? Fuck! The chorus of most songs was interupted by Fuck. What are you looking at? Fuck! This was the generall gist of it, but let me tell you, in between speaker climbing, body slamming, and wild arse guitar, I didn't care about what they were actually singing. The vibe was awesome, the whole band just rocked the house in a nasty nasty way. The crowd loved it, the band seemed to love it and the whole show was an absolute hit.
Then Jebediah switched with Jed Whitey. They played mostly new songs and were overall pretty tame. They sorta just stood there and sang, like that was enough. I guess it should have been enough, but I was there to see Jebediah go off, and they just... didn't! Most people I talked to said they were pretty disappointed, not with Jebediah, but that Jed Whitey fully upstaged Jebediah.
Overall I think Jed Whitey mopping the floor with Jebediah is a good thing. At least it shows that there are awesome bands on the up in WA and we dont have to cling to the claim that Jebediah are our boys. Now we have a whole collective who are just as good if not better. What I suggest you do with this information is pack your sneakers and take off to a Jed Whitey show asap!!!!
